about

Anita Starlight is one of the first songs we ever wrote, all the way back in 2016. The title is from a misheard lyric with a really basic 80's 808 beat that sat under a James Bond inspired bass line. We layered that heavily with guitar and keyboard effects along with an additional arpeggio Korg synth.

Musically, the song goes through 3 distinct parts. It opens with upbeat and innocent 80s electropop; proceeds to a more subdued and ethereal sound that's then overpowered by a wall of guitar and drums, and ends with heavy guitars and the arrival of a 90’s grunge vibe.

The meaning behind the music is about innocence transforming to guilt, which you can feel through the building of the 3 musical parts. The beginning is reminiscent of 80’s fun and its unique style and identity. The middle section provides time to breathe and question the world we have created (or decimated) through ignorance, and the ending symbolises the darkness of the 90’s era and the problems that began to materialise - environmentally, socially and politically.

We normally write and create the music first to a point where we are both happy with the track and it feels complete musically, then we decide whether the song needs vocals or not. At the time we were working on this track, we were promoting the first album and played a show with Melbourne duo Cynthia. We really loved their sound so asked Amy Jackson if she would like to add vocals to the song.

On her lyrics she said:
“They just came to me to be honest. It [recording] was while the world went to shit with what’s going on around us, bush fires, global warming, covid-19 and BLM seems to be a common thread in all of those things with the ’I Can’t Breath’ lyrics." Amy Jackson

Once Amy laid down her emotive haunting first take vocals, we knew the song had depth and meaning. The final touches went to guest Daryl Bradie to put down amazing melodic guitar over the end section, to signal there is a new hope!!!

lyrics

Stop me, coz I can't breathe
I'm trying to move by quietly
Youve gotta realize, you don’t let go
To the ones that tell you what they know
Stop me, coz I can't breathe
